CHAPTER EIGHT

LANE

Swerving back into my lane after hitting the turtles on the side of the road, I try to focus on staying on the road and not in the ditch. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that. I...” She pauses. Sitting back into her seat and refastening her seatbelt, looking embarrassed, she continues. “It’s not just about you saving me the other night. There’s something more.” She pauses, looking out the window.

Wanting to break the silence and wanting to get to know her more, I ask. “Do you have family around?” I glance over to her for her response.

She shakes her head, then whispers, “No.”

“Where are they?”

She’s silent as she stares out the side window. “Hey, where’s my happy Butterfly?” She turns and as she does, she wipes at her eyes. And I know it’s not from the ulceration.

She gives me a weak smile. “I’m sorry. Just old ghosts.”

Pulling her hand to my lips, I kiss it. “Let’s exorcise the ghosts for the day.” Smiling at her, she nods and turns to me. Her body language more relaxed.

Pulling into the Oregon Gardens, Emmy looks surprised. “Wow, I’ve never taken the time to come here before, I hear it’s beautiful.”

Taking her hand and leading her inside, I say. “I’ve been here for a couple of weddings. It’s a wonderful day out and I thought you would like the flowers. With fall just around the corner, I wanted to take in as much of the outdoors as possible.”

“This would make a lovely wedding venue. Especially when everything is in bloom.”

We walk around the garden. The leaves are starting to turn with autumn quickly approaching.

We dined at the resort's restaurant and ended in the Fireside Lounge before heading back.

Back at her house, I lead her up the path to her front door. “Can you come in for a little while?” She asks.

Not ever dating before, I don’t know what to do. I don’t want her to think I want to sleep with her on the first date, although, God, I would love to. She’s beautiful and smart and fun to be with. “I would love to.”

Unlocking the door, she leads me inside. Her home is cozy. It doesn’t look as if it has been updated, she’s made it very nice. “Make yourself at home, would you like a glass of wine?”

“That sounds great, thank you.” I wonder around her living room while she’s getting our wine. Pictures line the built-in bookcase and I stand there gazing at all the photos. Some are of her and her parents when she was a young girl, others look more recent. I pick up one of the photos. She’s standing in front of a car, running her finger over the curves and valleys of the body, the same way she did with Obsidian. It can’t be. He’s a one of a kind.

“He’s always been my favorite.”

I jump, almost dropping the picture. “I don’t understand, how you know him?” Her eyes shimmer as she walks over to me handing me my wine.
